On the downside, it’s a lot of RNG for a management game. On the upside, it’s not actually a deck-building mechanic, rather just a vehicle for some RNG. When you have adequate funds or mana built up, you can draw three cards from the respective deck, and choose one to keep. As I suspected, the card mechanic is my least favorite part. It’s a quirky take on your pretty average management game fare. If you fail the final scenario, however, you are given the option to replay just that level, however, I elected to start over with all the knowledge I’d gained from my previous playthrough to see if I could set myself up for success a little bit better. I’m just shy of 14 hours in, and have not yet managed to beat the campaign. I played on the standard difficulty (Sorcerer), but I decreased the game speed in order to have more time on each level, and it was still challenging to try to knock out all the necessary quests. ![]() There are five difficulty levels, five game speeds, and challenge rules that you can mix and match to customize your experience. The seventh time you do this, you need to complete a series of quests to defeat the Forces of Evil once and for all. You will also get a new curse, which makes things more difficult. In campaign mode, at the end of each level, you will be awarded a spellbook to use in all future levels, the strength of which depends on how many quests you were able to complete in the previous level. Meanwhile, you need to make nice with various factions, and you’ve got to work quickly, because the Forces of Evil are coming, making it necessary to move on to a new location and start again. Otherwise, it sounded right up my alley – you manage a magic school, building classrooms and services, hiring staff, and creating houses to focus the studies of certain students. The reason I thought I wouldn’t like it all that much is that, like every third game released in the past two years, there’s a card mechanic, and I am so over card games. ![]() But sometimes a game surprises me, and Spellcaster Universitydefinitely surprised me. Real quick plot set-up (not that it matters, because director Brian Levant’s movie is all about the sight gags): Suzanne is a Portland party planner with a big event scheduled for New Year’s Eve in Vancouver. Be sure to watch “Are We There Yet?” before it leaves Netflix at the end of the month.None of this helps, though, when the passengers of said vehicles are the manipulative, high-maintenance brother-sister duo of Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Daniel Bolden), under the inept, reluctant watch of Nick (Ice Cube), who tolerates them in an effort to woo their exceedingly hot, divorced mother, Suzanne (Nia Long). It’s unfortunate to see this one leaving Netflix since, compared to a few other comedy movies on there, it was quite enjoyable to watch. It is perfect to watch on this upcoming three day weekend or any future snow days. “Are We There Yet?” is a classic to revisit or watch for the first time. It includes the same characters with a different plot. A sequel by the name of “Are We Done Yet?” was released in 2007. The adventures of the troublesome kids and Nick doesn’t end with this movie. It adds to the plot because it also marked one of the first pranks the kids play on him, and those scenes were always very funny. As a result, five or six guards attack him to the ground. In another scene, at the beginning of the trip, they get kicked out of the airport because Kevin puts a corkscrew in Nick’s pocket, causing the metal detector to go off. In reality, this wouldn’t happen at all, but it adds to the humor of the movie because of the thrill of all the chaos being shown. For example in one part, Nick and the kids end up falling off a cliff in the vehicle after being chased by a trucker and the car lands perfectly, with little damage. However, they don’t distract from the main storyline or from the humor. There are some impractical and unrealistic scenes included in the movie too. They were strangers but one trip bonded them into a family. They were strangers, s Nick and the kids went along on their adventure, from missing both the plane and the train, to driving all the way in the car, they really started to bond and learn more about each other. It was interesting how the director, Brian Levant who is also known for directing a few “Scooby Doo” movies and “The Spy Next Door,” of the movie portrayed the development of the relationship between Nick and the kids. They made it even more amusing and fun to watch. They were the reason for all the mishaps that were incorporated in the story, such as the car being set on fire at one point. The kids are what made the movie so chaotic. The actors of the children Lindsey and Kevin, also put on an amazing show. His behavior comes with the caveat that he does it all just to be part of Suzanne’s life. ![]() He is relaxed, a little immature and throws money at the kids to solve conflicts. Ice Cube plays his character in a very comedic and funny manner. The trip to the final destination is not a smooth one: Lindsey and Kevin still hope to keep their mother and father together, so they mischievously prank Nick the entire trip to make his life miserable. When emergency strikes, he offers to accompany the kids to Canada to meet their mother. Nick decides that he is willing to change and put up with her kids for the sake of getting to know Suzanne better. It all changes when Nick meets a woman, Suzanne, that he’s interested in and realizes that she has two children, Lindsey and Kevin. He is a sports fan, loves cars and absolutely despises kids. The story follows the main character, Nick, a carefree guy who works at a collectables sports shop in Portland, OR. 1, 2019, the movie is number five on Netflix’s Top 10 movie list. 28, making these coming weeks the last chances to watch it on the service before it’s gone.Įven though this movie is over 15 years old, it is still very popular since it is funny, well-acted, and has a meaningful, although predictable, storyline. Now, Netflix plans to remove “Are We There Yet?” and other movies on Feb. It is common for Netflix to remove titles off of their server so that there is space for newer content. ![]() ![]() My husband did watch the birth and he took pictures of the doctor pulling my son out of me. In surgery I became very cold and my blood pressure plummeted so they gave me oxygen and talked to me to keep me awake. ![]() The staff pulled up a blue sheet so I didn’t have to watch them cut me open. I had never had surgery before but I knew I just wanted him out of me because it would be safer for him to be out rather than in me with his poor heartrate issues. They used my epidural to administer more medication for the C-section surgery.īeing wheeled into the surgical suite scared me. By 10:30 am the midwife announced we were moving to C-section because of failure to progress in a dysfunctional labor. I was relieved his heartrate was better but I feared progression would not come on its own. I could not sleep even though I could no longer feel the contractions. I hunched over for epidural placement at 7:30 am. She thought sleep would progress labor to full dilation. My son’s heartrate eventually improved so she wanted to try an epidural to see if I could sleep. She gave me Pitocin but that did not work to progress my labor either. ![]() The midwife was mystified by how I would dilate to an 8 or 9 but shrink back to a 7 over and over again after each contraction. (A bizarre side effect with my first son’s labor I was plagued by hiccups.) I continued to burp and endure contractions all night long but every time my dilation would progress, it would immediately go backwards again. My son now finds this hilarious as burps are super funny to him. I had the strange labor reaction of incessant burping which was awful to me. She put me in the tub, but that just slowed down my dilation so I headed back to the bed. I labored in different positons to try and improve his heartrate, but this did not help. However, the labor would not progress and his heartrate continued to concern the midwife. I was confident in natural labor because I had achieved natural childbirth with my first son’s birth. I developed a fever and my son’s heartrate indicated some distress so the midwife strongly urged us to continue with natural labor because she said he would likely end up in the NICU if I was given an epidural. Labor continued without induction meds throughout the night. The medication was pulled but the induction had started contractions so the labor had begun. The induction began but had to be stopped immediately because my contractions became too strong. We arrived at the hospital and were admitted at 9 pm. I wanted to get him out of me so I pushed for induction at nine days past my due date. I was overdue with my middle son and the midwife would let me go two weeks overdue which I did not like. My middle son’s birth had all possible labor scenarios: overdue induction, natural labor with a midwife, dysfunctional labor progression with Pitocin added, epidural pain relief, and physician performed C-section. My third son’s birth was a planned C-section and interestingly the quickest and easiest recovery. With my first son labor was natural with a midwife who performed hypnosis on me (which worked to reduce my pain for a good portion of the labor), and a bit of Pitocin to finish dilation. My three birthing experiences were completely different. Her story is posted below and make sure to leave her a comment. It’s crazy how birth can have the scariest moments and then once baby arrives, none of it matters anymore. Her story has a lot of ups and downs and ends perfectly. Yay for another birth story on the blog this week! It’s time to welcome Julie on the blog this week. ![]() I could never see a film in Lawrence again.’ In elementary school his teacher made ‘unpleasant and derogatory remarks about Negroes’ and he was stoned by classmates on his way home. The sign said: ‘Coloured not admitted.’ ‘My playmates,’ Hughes continued, ‘who were white and lived next door to me, could go to that motion picture and I could not. One afternoon I put my nickel down and the woman pushed it back and she pointed to a sign. It was a nickelodeon, and I had a nickel to go. One of my earliest childhood memories was going to the movies in Lawrence, Kansas, where we lived, and there was one motion picture theatre, and I went every afternoon. From my very earliest childhood memories, I have encountered very serious and very hurtful problems. In his testimony to Cohn and McCarthy, Hughes described the origins of his desire for radical change in American society: By 1901, however, when Hughes was born, the spread of Jim Crow laws had eroded the promise of emancipation and Black suffrage. His younger brother, John Langston, became one of the most prominent advocates for Black rights in the Reconstruction era, and was elected to Congress in 1890. Mary’s next husband, Charles Henry Langston, was an abolitionist too he insisted they name their son after Nat Turner, the leader of the 1831 Virginia slave revolt. The following year, Leary was recruited by John Brown for his suicidal raid on Harpers Ferry, and the bullet-riddled shawl that was eventually returned to Mary was in due course used as a blanket for the infant Langston (a middle name – he was baptised James, after his father). His maternal grandmother, Mary Patterson, married Lewis Sheridan Leary in 1858. The spirit of revolt did, however, run in the family. So convincingly did he present himself as a reformed communist that, at the conclusion of the final session, McCarthy actually winked at him, or so Hughes liked to relate. ![]() The transcripts of those sessions, declassified in 2003, present a battle of wits, as Hughes ducks or deflects or refutes Cohn’s assaults without ever seeming to lose his cool, though his livelihood was on the line. ![]() Hughes was not himself prone to explosive behaviour, even when summoned to Washington to account for his radical past by Joe McCarthy, and taunted and grilled by Roy Cohn, McCarthy’s chief counsel, in March 1953. Biden was referring to Hughes’s long poem of 1951, Montage of a Dream Deferred, which is made up of characters, idioms and vignettes from Harlem life, and posits this central question: It isn’t unusual for American politicians to talk about dreams in their speeches, but they don’t often quote from Langston Hughes, famous for his communist sympathies and irreverent poems (‘Listen Christ,/You did alright in your day, I reckon –/But that day’s gone now’). ‘T oo many dreams have been deferred for too long,’ Joe Biden announced in his acceptance speech of 7 November 2020. |
